The Egg-cellent Egg Contest is $15 and is open to 4-H enrolled youth who have a flock of laying hens currently laying. All youth will be required to enroll with 4-H Online if not already enrolled.

Youth in Cherokee County will be able to register through the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Cherokee County Center. Participants who complete the project will receive a t-shirt. Cloverbuds (youth ages 5-7) will receive medals and older age categories will receive ribbons and award money if they get 1st-3rd place in one of the color/size categories. The youth will be split based on the N.C. Cooperative Extension Poultry Area Specialized Agent(ASA) Regions. Cherokee County youth will only compete against counties in the counties in yellow on the map below.width="732" height="297"
The whole contest is virtual and there is a Google site that houses all of the information youth will need. A link to the Google site will be sent to participants after September 9th. There are two mandatory trainings the participants must attend. Participants can join the live Zoom (see information about attending a Zoom session open to 4-H members) or view the recording. If participants view the recording, they will have to let Cherokee County 4-H agent, Shannon Coleman, know when they have watched so they can get checked off.

Youth can submit up to 2 dozen eggs as long as they are in two different categories. There are three color categories (white, brown, blue/green) and multiple size categories. The Area Specialized Poultry Agents will help coordinate with the agents in their counties to get the eggs to Raleigh for judging.
Below are important dates:
  • Registration for Cherokee County 4-H members is September 8 because the state closes registration on September 9

  • Checks received by Sept 23 – if not received by this date, the youth will not be able to participate
