Healthy living starts in adolescence and kitchen skills are a must. Our Family and Consumer Science Agent, Sarah Ware, put a spin on a popular TV show, Chopped, to get youth interested in food safety and nutrition.

One of the top four issues self-reported by Jones County residents in the Community Health Opinion survey was obesity. Sarah Ware partnered with Carteret FCS Agent, Stephanie Stevenson, and our 4-H Agent, Samantha Bennett, to provide a 3-day class, with 11 children ages 9-12. This workshop took place on Monday, December 20th, 2021 through Wednesday, December 23rd, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at our office!

The first two days Sarah Ware, Stephanie StevensonSamantha Bennett taught the children about kitchen safety, proper knife skills, cooking temperatures, and MyPlate.

All participating youth had to be registered with 4-HOnline.

The final day youth tested their skills in a friendly cooking competition. We had judges come in to taste their dishes and choose our 3 winners!

Shoutout to our judges: J.J. Ervin, Taffy Jones, and Adrian Smith!
We appreciate you taking the time to taste our 4-H Chef’s creations!

Congrats to our three Chopped: Holiday Edition (2021) winners!

Our winning 4-Hers: Jackson King, Connor Howard, and Cooper Torrence

Our winning 4-Hers: Jackson King, Connor Howard, and Cooper Torrence

A huge thanks to all of our 4-Hers that participated! Your participation and will to learn contributed to this workshop’s success!

Our agents were able to educate 85% of the children on how to safely and efficiently use cutting techniques, 95% of the children on proper portion sizes, and all 11 participants learned about cross contamination. These skills are important for youth to grow into healthy adults that can spread their knowledge to others.
