The Filling Station in Pollocksville was the place to be on Thursdays in October for an exciting four-day Hooked on Seafood series. Held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., this engaging series offered six participants a well-rounded dive into the world of seafood. From understanding fishing regulations to learning how to fillet fish, the workshop combined education, hands-on skills, and practical knowledge to inspire confidence in handling and preparing seafood.
A Weekly Breakdown
Each week brought a unique focus, ensuring participants gained a comprehensive understanding of seafood, from ocean to table.
Day 1: Fishing Regulations
The workshop kicked off with an insightful presentation by Marine Fisheries, covering:
- Current fishing regulations and their importance.
- Sustainable fishing practices to protect marine ecosystems.
- Tips for responsibly sourcing and selecting seafood.
This session set the stage for participants to appreciate the broader impact of seafood on the environment and local communities.
Day 2: Cooking Methods and Filleting Fish
Participants were thrilled to welcome Greg Boulton, Seafood Specialist, who led an interactive session on filleting fish.

- Expert tips for safe and efficient filleting.
- A discussion on how to identify a healthy fish
Day 3: Nutrition and Budgeting
The third session focused on making seafood accessible and nutritious:
- Nutritional benefits of incorporating seafood into meals.

- Simple, delicious recipes to get the most value from every dish.
Day 4: Seafood Safety
The final session emphasized the importance of handling seafood with care:
- Proper storage techniques to maintain freshness.
- Tips for safe preparation, including handling raw fish.
- Understanding common seafood-related food safety concerns and how to prevent them.
