Here are some of the key accomplishments from our team:
Margaret Ross:
- Awarded 1st Place in the 2024 NCACAA Communications Awards for both Computer-Generated Presentation with Script and Published Photo. Her educational poster on the Coastal Plains Chicken Project – Poultry Processing Demonstration earned praise.
- At the 2025 Extension Conference, Margaret’s team won the Search for Excellence Southeast District Team Award and Overall Team Award for the Egg-cited About Embryology Project.
- Her poster on the Coastal Plains Chicken Project also earned 2nd Place at the Poster Contest.
Samantha Bennett:
- Recognized with the 2024 Excellence in Teamwork Award from the North Carolina Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals for the Full Circle Project, collaborating with Emoni, Jacob, Margaret, and Sarah.
- Awarded Team Social Media Package/Campaign and Team Social Media Piece for the Set the Stage Summer Camp media package and the Jones County Dairy Project flyer with Emoni.
- Earned the 2024 Lathan F. Smith Excellence in 4-H Award and was accepted into the Agricultural Education and Human Science PhD Program at NCSU.
Sarah Ware:
- Honored with Distinguished Educator in Home Food Preservation, Innovative Youth Development Programming, Food Safety, and Dr. Marjorie Donnelly Family & Consumer Sciences Leadership Development Awards in 2024.
- Awarded the Community Partnership Award and Excellence in Teamwork Award in 2024.
- Completed her Masters in Nutrition at NC State and began her PhD in Nutrition at NC State in 2024.
Emoni Burgess:
- Winner of the 2024 Southeast District Administrative Professional of the Year Award.
- Elected President of the Southeast District’s N.C. Cooperative Extension Administrative Professionals Association (NCCEAPA).
- Increased NCCEAPA meetings to four per year, making the Southeast District the first in the entire state to achieve this, providing more professional development opportunities.
Kristi Welke:
- Assisted in disaster relief during Hurricane Helene by helping farmers in Avery/Mitchell County with livestock supplies and coordinating hay donations across Western NC as part of the Hay Team for NCSU.
- Led a Raising Livestock on Small Acreage program attended by 18 participants across four counties, covering fencing, rotational grazing, and pasture management.
- Organized a Grazing Demo that educated farmers on pasture health and stocking rates, with positive feedback from attendees.
- Partnered in the Craven/Pamlico Dairy Project, providing youth an opportunity to raise and show dairy heifers.
Jacob Morgan:
- Led the 16th Annual Jones County Heritage Festival, a celebration of local agricultural heritage, featuring craft vendors, food, car shows, and competitive events like the frying pan and hay toss.
- Managed the Large On-Farm Variety Test in partnership with Haddock Farms, allowing Jones County farmers to compare cotton varieties in a real farming setting.
- Worked closely with local growers, addressing challenges like disease, pest control, and fertility issues across various crops throughout the season.
- Provided 12 pesticide recertification opportunities to local pesticide applicators, helping them maintain certification through hands-on learning and presentations.
